Re: Update settings overriden, again

I agree, that the log files tell you afterwards but the issue for some of the folks seems to have been that they had MU set and its still overrode, so we need to wait and see.

I am sure the MS update team would be examining any log files sent in as a means to determine what's been going on.

The "heads up advisory" doesn't always tell all you need to know from past experience. It's the potential for "something else changing the setting" we need to understand better if that's what's causing the problems.

They do. In the heads up Thursday email. Furthermore start/run windowsupdate.log and the entire log of what happens on your machine is right there.

It's also up to the end user to understand the settings they have chosen. Every time I patch I choose MU, custom install and I LOOK at what is being installed and I've not seen anything I've not expected.

BTW not overridden here.

Believe me .. I'd be on a plane to Seattle ready to throttle a few folks...but right now I've not see the windowsupdate.log files of any alledged "changee" to confirm their claims. "Show me the log".

I do know that I see a lot of folks that have onecare or some other software that DO change things. Sometimes some"thing" else changes a setting.

OK lets wait and see what they discover. Maybe they have had someone piggyback on the UA cycle and trashed some machines. Given the amount of attack vector stuff being worked on at present it wouldn't be surprising.

Microsoft needs to start telling each user exactly what they are installing at each update cycle BEFORE the cycle starts, machine by machine. They can do this as they know what they are applying based on the GUID and manifest details they are capture and store for each PC.
