Thank you , thank you!! My hard drive crashed last week and I had to replace
it. After loading XP SP2, I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't update---I
was also getting the exact same message. I was about ready to throw the
laptop against a wall when I read this article. I registered the DLLs as
described, and FINALLY the updates are installing. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Thank you very very much for this great post!! I have been pulling out what.
little remaining hair I have trying to figure out why updates were not being
loded after I did a repair of XP SP2 from the original installation disk two
days ago. My problem EXACTLY matches that described in your link. Until I
saw it, I was wondering what the heck did I do wrong -- I guess that
unfortunate timing in deciding to repair my installation of Windows XP along
with Microsoft's faux pas was the entire reason for something that I was
blaming myself.

The fix is here, and it seems Microsoft Screwed us again.
From the Langa website "However, after using the repair option from an XP
CD-ROM, Windows Update now downloads and installs the new 7.0.600.381
executable files. Some WU executables aren't registered with the operating
system, preventing Windows Update from working as intended. This, in turn,
prevents Microsoft's 80 latest patches from installing — even if the patches
successfully downloaded to the PC."
