This was very helpful..thx a lot

Hi. I had the same problem. Cannot upload windows update when laptop was
joined in the domain. Our administrator said that it IS really because of the
group policy and it will work if I try to download updates in our network.

But since I'm always at the client (and I never connect to our network), I
tried to find a way to solve this.

Anyway this is how I solved this problem. I changed the value of the
registry key UseWUserver
(HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windowsupdate\AU) from 1 to 0. :)
From what I understand, if this is set to 1, it uses the custom server
defined in WUServer and WUStatusServer.

Good luck :)

I noticed that when i log on locally (not part of the domain) i am also
unable to update vista. So, does the group policy effect both domain and
local settings?

I have admin rights on this machine. I do not have the group policy editor
on this machine.

I have looked through the registry extensively and i found this section
under HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windowsupdate\:

WUserver reg_sz http://38.118.50.200
WUStatusServer reg_sz http://38.118.50.200

If i type these into my browser i can not access this site.

The next level in this section is \AU

AUOptions reg_dword 0x000000 (0)
Detection freguency (22)
detectionfrequency enabled (1)
NoAutoUpdate (0)
UseWUserver (1)

I can not find a description of these keys to know what to change to. I do
know that in the AUoption under:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate
the value is:

AUOptions reg_dword 0x000004 (4)
configversion is (1).

Still looking for a solution. Thanks.

Vista windows update worked fine. I had my computer added to our
company domain and now when i go to window update it says:

(link butto) Check for Windows updates

and below it says:

you receive updates: managed by system administrator
(link) check online for updates from microsoft

when i click on the top button I always receive the error 80072EFD

when i click on the bottom link i receive updates ok (i think)

I asked out IT dept and they said they do not block users from getting
windows updates and that there is nothing in the policies that should
change my settings.

I very much doubt what your IT department have told you. I strongly suspect
that they have Group Policy to set a Web Proxy, or something similar, and
that is what is what is preventing you from receiving updates.

They might also have Group Policy to configure a WSUS server instead of the
public Microsoft ones.
