Re: Problems installing critical update

I'm not blasting the messenger as much as the OS. <w>
One would think that Vista's updating mechanism wouldn't be so fragile.

Thanks for posting this method. [ I prefer Cabinet Sauvignon, BTW <w>]

On the Automatic updates I keep getting the message to download & install
this patch (Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 for Service
Pack 2)(KB936181). According to my history I have done this correctly but
the message is still there when I reboot.

Try downloading and installing that update manually?
If necessary disconnect from the Internet and shut down everything
to get a clean install. E.g. then you could even try installing it during
a safe boot (when probably even more than "everything" would be shut down.)
Verbose logging may provide better clues if even that doesn't work.

Good luck

The repeat update request has been happening to me too, for about a week now. I did try Roberts suggestion about the manual download, but I'm still getting the update requests.

I emailed MS customer service this morning and am still waiting for an
answer. I will post whatever they tell me.

Did you or anyone get an actual fix for this? I'm currently getting
Microsoft Update to require me to install both KB936181 and KB933579.
Go though the steps, get the ...done! message indicating that it was
successful, then within a few minutes get another automatic update
saying i need these same files. This happens both via internet
download (via Microsoft Updates site) as well as a direct download
onto the harddrive.

I just figured out how to correct the update circular repeat on a
Vista (Home) Premium system using the following high level process:

1. Conduct a search for "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core
Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)"
2. Locate the exact download of this update from Microsoft
3. Download the Update
4. Execute the Update
5. Run the Update
6. Deinstall the Existing Update
7. Reboot (depending on the speed of your system, have a snack, a
glass of wine, etc.)
8. Restore your system to a normal state
9. Manually install the patch
10. Reboot your system
11. Have another glass of wine (I strongly recommend a "Merlot"; I
love Merlots)
12. Run the Update patch again, but this time :REPAIR the stupido
patch!!!!
13. Reboot your PC
14. Return your PC to a normal state
15. Break open another bottle of "Merlot"
16. Now you can Party!!!
17. My recurring prompt to install this foolist patch is no longer,
I've check for updates, and MS indicates that no updates are available
at this time!
18. Please advise if this helped you at all.

Please keep in mind that, all of this must be done at an
administrative level. Prior to checking this thread; I reboot, and
checked for updates, and I am no longer prompted and this update is
loaded successfully. So, my very high level (simple) process did work
for me. I am only volunteering a solution that appears to work. An
alternative, would be to just run the repair. If this is your issue,
it won't hurt to give it a try.

Please don't blast the messenger...
