hi, thanks so much for yr response.
i've followed your links for update and repair of BITS -both processes
when ran said 'not neccessary at this time' indicating that it is up to
date and not corrupted.

Sorry but i haven't been able to find out how to check if BITS is
enabled or not. How do you do this?

wuaueng.dll in WINDOWS\system32 is version 7.0.6000.374, not the
version you stated. is that a major problem?

security is norton antivirus 2006, which came with the laptop.
