You are *not* the only one having trouble with Windows Updates. I am not
the only one *not* having trouble with Windows Updates. Some people have
trouble - others do not. Usually the trouble can be fixed and/or traced
back to a change made between the last time it worked and now (the time it
did not work) - although sometimes it *is* the updates themselves that cause
issues.
You say 'failed again'... Does that mean the updates failed last month as
well? Have they been failing consistently for some time?
If so, try this:
Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".
Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot.
- Download/Install Windows Update v3.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
You *WILL* want to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right
after a reboot - immediately after logging in.
- Download/Install the 927891 patch.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A
- Reboot.
If you are tired of Windows that much - remove it and install something
else. Perhaps Ubuntu...

Otherwise I hope your rant helped you in some way.

People could learn alot from you Shenan Stanley. Kudos to your response, it
(other than its tone!) was actually very informative.
I have been having problems with Windows but am not complaining about the
product itself which if I had more money I would have Microsoft everything!
I am more scared that I Windows will potentially crash and leave me without a
functional computer which I rely upon heavily as my crutch while I am in a
"healing" pattern while off on disability for two months. It is my only
connection to my office email as well as my therapeutic hobbies like writing
the crappy reviews I write and other ridiculous hobbies I wouldn't waste a
second of time on if I weren't stuck at home. That means that I really won't
have anything if my computer goes down.
Any chance someone could help me out with my Add/Remove Programs nightmare
that has a gazillion programs I don't recognize with the Remove button
missing on everything so I cannot remove anything? I am runninng authentic
Windows XP Home SP2 but since I purchased the computer from Boeing Industries
don't have any discs. Also, I have constantly erased the restore points
since I had been trying to keep my computer running fast and so I have
nothing to restore it to!
I am not very computer literate, but may be able to handle this with
someone's help and good (simple step by step) instruction in English (versus
computer lingo) and any slang is okay too!
