Re: WU page won't display, error 80070570

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

You have to stop the Automatic Updates service prior to renaming SoftwareDistribution ? If you did that and still get an Access Denied error then the Default Permissions have been changed.
Will wait until you let us know IF the AU service was stopped before giving further steps.

I attempted to resolve the "issue" by following the instructions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910359
but when I got to step 3 I encountered a problem. When I tried to
rename the Software Distribution folder I was not allowed.

Here's the message I got:
"Cannot rename Software Distribution: access id denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file
is not currently in use."

There is lots of free space on disk C (25GB), the file was not in use, so I'm assuming it must be write-protected. Is there a way I can rename it anyway?

I didn't continue on to steps 4 and 5.

Correct. The registry editing is not needed in XP. Having just seen Taurarian's latest response to you

0x80070570 - ERROR_FILE_CORRUPT
I was looking at the possibility of corrupt activeX controls.

there is also the possibility that the installed AV did the corrupting.
Norton anyone ? <w>

Did you attempt the Manual steps laid out at :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910359

If it did have to do with the ActiveX controls, what would be the fix?

Fixing it is possible BUT, as I've stated previously, not scanning certain locations of the WINDOWS directory will mitigate this issue from reappearing.
Either that or installing a non-destructive AV instead of the 'malware-like' AV currently installed.

Thanks for making the effort to really communicate an answer.
I'm still an ignorant noob when it comes to computer stuff, so need to be spoon fed and walked through things.

The info on the page you linked to regarding virus scans is interesting. Because it makes it seem to me that the scans may have generated the problem. If that's true then it seems essential to fix the cause and not just the symptom. And if it's true, then it seems odd that the causes of the problem are not mentioned on that page I linked to above.

On the page you linked to pertainging to virus scans, there is mention at the beginning about backing up and modifying registries (which intimidates me a little), but am I reading it right that, because I'm running XP, the registry part doesn't apply to me?

I suppose then that I will attempt a fix shortly. I will report on the results, as I think it may help someone at a future date to know if this was successful. Most of the other threads here about these issues do not contain follow ups, so the outcome isn't known.

Thanks again.

I suspect that the URL you posted is the proper one since it deals with the issue of connecting to the WU site, not the installation of updates.
However, the Manual step for renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder should contain a warning that renaming it will delete the updating history shown on the WU site.

Suggest you do the steps manually. BUT, the issue may rear it's ugly head again somewhere down the line. It would behoove you to configure the antivirus software to scan the system per this MS KB article in order to avoid this issue in the future:

Thanks for the prompt reply. I did do another search using the error code # which took me to a page with a different solution:
You receive a "0x800A01AE" error message or a "0x080070570" error message when you try to connect to the Windows Update Web page or to the Microsoft Update Web page in Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910359

The page you directed me to shows a different error code #. Is that not important?

BTW, on the page I linked to above there is an option for using Guided Help to fix the problem. I tried downloading that program but got a message saying to try again later because it was not possible to download that program at that time. So I thought I'd wait until getting suggestions here before trying that fix manually.

So which fix is appropiate?
