I've been battling this for some time and looked everywhere for help. Now
the PC runs like new.
My best to you,

How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if Internet Explorer
7 is installed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964
Before you perform a repair installation of Windows XP, you must uninstall Internet
Explorer 7. If you do not uninstall Internet Explorer 7 in this situation, Internet
Explorer will no longer work after the repair installation is completed. Specifically, the
repair installation does not restore earlier versions of the files in the
Program Files\Internet Explorer folder. Therefore, the Internet Explorer 7 files will be
incompatible with the Internet Explorer 6 files that are installed in the Windows\System32
folder.

I have the exact same symptoms so I think I've got the same problem. Before
I try your suggestion, could I ask why you asked about IE7? I think this may
be a clue as to why the malfunction. IE7 was installed on my PC before the
reinstallation. It was working fine afterwards but after a while it reverted
tp IE6.
Many thanks!

See if reregistering these files resolves the issue -
Go to Start > Run > type in these commands [or, copy&paste them]
Then click OK or press Enter after each one
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
net start wuauserv
wuauclt /detectnow
Was IE7 installed and *NOT uninstalled* prior to the Repair Install ?

Hi,
thanks for the reply, it was a repair installation, what I did was install
it over the top of the existing installation, through windows. The firwall
is Comomdo and the anti virus is NOD32. Yes, it is Serevice Pack 2.

Was this a clean reinstall or a Repair Installation ?
The version of Windows is XP Home Edition SP2, correct ?
Which firewall and antivirus program is being used ?
Open the WindowsUpdate.log by going to Start > Run > type in
%windir%\windowsupdate.log
Click OK
Scroll down towards the bottom and see if you can locate any error codes.
Work your way back up the log and see if there are any error codes from
the date that the system accessed Windows Update.
Please copy & paste at least 40 or so lines of the log into your reply.
