ok so this makes 3 posts in a row, but i can't find any option to just edit
previous posts. I thought it might be helpful if I pasted the log from the
CBS.log file as well?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium and am having trouble with checking
for updates via the Windows update app. When i click on check for updates
it
does what it's doing for about 30 seconds and then comes back with an
unexpected error (8000FFFF).
I've read through a few other threads on this discussion group and tried a
few of the solutions in there (Stopping the windows update service and
deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarting and trying again) but
it
comes up with the same problem.
When checking to see the latest updates that were installed to see if one
of
them could be the problem, I find that the latest update "installed" was
Windows Update Software 7.0.6000.734, so I'm assuming that that is the
problem. All things indicate that this update was installed correctly, so
I
don't know why it would not be working.
When checking the WindowsUpdate.log file, it has these lines:
