Windows Update fails on XP without error

Hello,

I am having a problem with Windows Update on a XP Home SP2 Computer
here:

When trying to update the machine, it downloads and installs for
minutes then I get a list of all the updates and the message, that all
the updates have failed without an error number.

What I tried:
made sure the services are running (they are)
I have no errors at all in event viewer
deleted cache, temp and software distribution folder
added the update sites to trusted zone
prayed
but to no avail
Then I downloaded baseline security analyser, which told me updates
were missing and I could install them by hand. So I figured that
activex blocking of content (forgive my english) and activated
execution of active content.

Now I can install the updates one by one by hand using the links in
baseline security analyser but this cant be a final solution.
