Which antivirus program/security suite is installed, Chip ?.
At this point, the only recourse would be to Stop the Automatic Update
service via the Services console, or go to Start > Run > type in
net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
Then show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#vista
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder
Delete the contents of these subfolders -
DataStore [NOTE: Doing so erases the Update history shown on the
Windows/Microsoft Update sites]
Download
EventCache
Restart the AU service either from the Services console or
Start > Run > type in
net start wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
Then revisit - http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx
Downloaded today's definitions and install them
Did that do the trick ?

No, even after installing up file from the URL you gave me, I still have a
message that Windows Defender has the same 6/19/07 update (KB 915597
Definition 1.19.2720.2) that I have installed repeatedly.

Yes, it's entirely possible it could have been worded differently.
See if manually installing the update resolves the issue
Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx
In the right frame under
" Latest Versions
Windows Defender "
click either the 32bit or 64bit Definitions, depending on your system.
Save the update
When the download is complete run mpas-fe.exe with Defender's GUI closed
Did that get the Defs installed without a prompt to download it again ?

Could you have worded your response a little differently? All you had to say
was, more information is required. My question was not about a specific
update, it was about the problem in general.
What, in God's name, are you MVP of? Protocol?
The updates DID install, at least that is what update history shows. 2
definition updates for Windows Defender and Window Update software
7.0.6000.374.
Have a nice day.
