I think I'm OK. I hate to install things with no explanation (no KB
article), but based on assurances here I let it install new Windows Update
software. Dialog said it was searching for updates, then nothing for a few
minutes, then I got the same dialog saying I needed to install new Windows
Update software. Clicked OK again, says its searching for updates, then
finally got dialog saying there were no updates. My wuaueng.dll went from
version 6 to 7 (also wuauclt.exe and some others), so I assume all went
well. Not well designed.

0x80245003 stems from the redirect cab located in WuRedir. Delete the
contents of that folder. No need to stop the AU service [at least there
wasn't on an XP system] nor to delete the entire SoftwareDistribution
folder which results in deleting the system's update history.
Then install the latest Windows Update Agent, if it hasn't been installed
already [check to see if %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll is at version
7.0.6000.374] :
For 32 bit [x86] Windows OS' [Win2K, WS 2003, XP, Vista]
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
For 64 bit [x64]
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe
How's things now, Richard ?

Thanks for the tip. I found this thread describing a possible fix for
error 80245003:

Although this probably does not restore your history. Me, I'll wait.
