There is a second step that needs to be carried out to resolve the
" svchost issue" : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891
If the "svchost issue" still persists after installing both the latest Windows Update Agent and KB927891 then please read this section of this blog : " Next steps for problem systems" : http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archive/2007/05/15/srvhost-msi-issue-follow-up.aspx

When this happens, if you check task manager you'll most likely find svchost running 99% CPU utilization. kb932494 details the problem and offers a hotfix that is supposed to correct the issue, but doesn't fix the problem for the PCs on my network exhibiting this issue. It is a growing problem that M$ has clearly failed to resolve..
As a workaround you can just turn off Automatic Updates.

I am sorry for the last post which may have been a bit confusing and not been very helpful into solving the problem which I have.
The problem that occurs with my laptop is that when I switch updates back on it slows the processor down until it almost crashes. This problem first occurred when I installed Office on my laptop, since then I have reinstalled Office. From my knowledge it was an Office update which was not downloading properly so I took all Office updates off, but still have the same problem. I do not get any error messages or update pop-ups.
I am currently using Windows xp home edition.
