Re: XP update loses sound card

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Wow, thanks for the prompt response Michel, i expected to wait at least a
week. I will take your advice and find out the sound card and look for a
driver. I tried rolling back the driver in device manager but this wasn't
possible. Not sure which sound card it was, i have a number of cd's lying
around, guess i can play with them as well.

Thanks again.

Hi there,

Never take drivers from windows update unless you like failing hardware.

If REALLY needed that is ONLY when your hardware does not funtion well take
the drivers from the manufacturers website.

In this case you can try to boot in safe mode and use system restore to a
restore point where the problem did not occur yet.

Or try rolling back on the driver in device manager.

Read the motherbord manual to see which sound card is used to determine the
driver if needed, normally you should have a cd rom on which the drivers for
the mainboard are to be found. If no manual was given with your pc go to the
website of the PC manufacturer.

Good luck and best regards,
Michel Denie

Man, i have been down exactly the same path as yourself and have now had
about 8 sleepless nights trying to solve this issue. Mine is even
simpler, i
just have a pair of Altec Lansing 120i speakers which have no software,
they
just use the speaker output jack. My sound completely disappeared
following
an automatic update. Its getting the same message every time i try and
re-install software, "microsoft kernel system audio device - has not
passed
windows logo testing to verity its compatibility with windows xp" Up
until
recently everything was ok, now it is all dead, despite paying money for a
'driver detective' which was a complete waste of time. If anybody has any
solution i would dearly love to hear of it. Thanks guys.

This is a much addressed topic and I have tried everything I can find and
cannot get XP update to work with my sound card. To add to my annoyance,
xp
does not work with my newer video card for microsoft games like Age of
Empies. I have read that the XP update is incompatible with my soundcard,
but
I refuse to believe that there is not some advanced fix for this.

I have a Tecra 9100 notebook with an integrated Yamaha AC-XG soundcard.
It came with a pre-service pack version of Windows.
Before updating, windows automatically installed an Intel 82801 CA/CAM
AC'97
driver and the sound worked fine. After updating, my sound card can not
be
found. The soundcard is installed but XP says it is not. No conflicts,
just
not installed. No drivers to rollback. Restoring to an earlier point does
not
work. Volume and sound control is greyed out. Adding a new device finds
nothing. Selecting a standard device from the hardware list does not
work.
Belarc Advisor finds nothing. My System Info finds nothing. My windows
audio
in computer management is set to automatic. My sound is up. I have all
the
newest and older drivers and tried them, but drivers will not work if XP
does
not recognize the hardware.

I remember reading somewhere that XP does something kernel-wise that
keeps
the hardware from being detected.

Is there any new advice out there? Help is much appreciated.
Thanks.
