Re: Microsoft / Windows Update - Continuous

For those that have had the same problem, I'll let you know how it's worked
out for me.

1. Uninstalled IE7 with the control panel. Quite painless. The software
will automatically go back to IE6 (this is something I didn't realize
previously). I did create a system restore point and turned off automatic
updates as recommended in the link that PA Bear provided. Just in case, I
also deleted the Sofware Distribution folder and renamed the catroot2 folder.

2. After system restart I went to the update website. Success. With my lap
top and desk top I had 35/63 updates respectively. Thanks Microsoft for
making me think I was receiving auto updates.

3. Call it foolish or feeling lucky, but I thought I'd go ahead and
reinstall IE7. (Sorry PA Bear, I had to give it a go) Everything installed
fine, and I was able to verify operation of the update web page. Since luck
was in my favor, I left the toolbars (yahoo, google), with continued success.

4. After success was validated on both units, I set another system restore
point and turned on the automatic update feature. We'll see where it goes
from here.

Best of luck. Thanks PA Bear.

You may have a horked install of IE7. I suggest that you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2. Uninstall all toolbars.

Any better now? (Do NOT reinstall IE7!)

After scanning the newsgroup for the last week and attempting all the
solutions, I'm at the end of my rope.
I'm running XP, SP-2, with Explorer 7. I do not receive any automatic
updates, nor can I get any results from the update webpage (continuous
green
bar movement). This is on both my lap top (XP - Prof) and my desk unit
(XP
- Home).

What I have tried -
- Re-registering all the .dll files as recommended in other threads.
- Cleaning out all history, cache, cookies, etc.
- Deleting the Software Distribution folder
- Adjusting the "trusted sites"
- Reinstalling the "update" software
- Disarming my Zone-Alarm software
- Doing a scan with the Kaspersky virus software (I get no mal-ware,
viruses
with the zone alarm software either)
- Disabling the Yahoo toolbar and Google toolbars
- Validatingthe BITS and Autoupdates functions are started and in
automatic.
Etc.

As with the other threads this started when I updated to SP2 / Internet
Explorer 7.

1) Does anyone have any further recommendations or found another solution?

2) Will it do any good to reinstall SP2 and/or Internet Explorer 7?

Please provide any assistance. Thanks!!
