Not only have there been scores of post on this Newsgroup to this effect but
the reports to the same effect have been made in many Forums.

For the time being, until Microsoft admit there is a problem and fix it, do
NOT use Windows Update automatically, Turn updates onto notify, when
notified see what the update is for, if you do not need it block it for the
future, if you do need it go to the Windows download forum and download the
update manually, make a restore point, then install the update. If it fouls
up your system or fails to install properly use system restore to get your
system back and then block the update.

Always make a system restore point before installing updates, the Microsoft
update system is so unreliable they should have this done automatically as
they do for other updates and installations
