Thanks for your response Shenan, I would like to give you the exact
message i received firstly to ensure i have explained the issue
correctly in the first instance if i may....

Message = "Windows cannot load the users profile but has logged you
on with the default profile for the system. DETAIL: The system has
attempted to load or restore a file into the registry but the
specified file is not in a registry file format"

To answer your question, Yes i am able to log on in Safe Mode and
choose the Administrator - how should i proceed?
Many Thanks

After the automatic update (express) and restart of my pc, i was
unable to access my user account using my existing password. A
message suggesting the registry file is not in the state as is
expected. Could not log in to my profile. The system logged me
in as a guest and now i do not have access to all of my
information previously stored under the My Documents folder etc.

Can you log into safe mode as the administrator?

The essential part...

Your profile has gone corrupt. There are many reasons this could happen.
Hardware, software, moon in wrong phase when you sneezed... You will likely
have to go into safe mode, create a new profile using the administrator
account, reboot and logon as the new user and manually copy the favorites,
my documents, etc from the old profile that you need. Do *not* move
everything - as something is corrupt with that old profile and if you moved
everything - guess what will be corrupt next? heh
