Take the machine and its WinXP CD to a local, reputable and independent shop (/not/ BigBoxStore USA). Have them backup your personal data then format & reinstall Windows.
Good luck.

PA Bear,
I followed your instructions however while the installation of SP2 was in
progress I received a message telling me that I had to uninstell IE7 before
continuing. I was a bit surprised as the whole problem was that I didn't
have IE7, however I found it and attempted to uninstall it. Someway through
the process I received a message advising that IE had encountered a problem
and was closing down. Since that time I have been unable to boot up (even
from the original XP disk). Any attempt I make to reinstall XP from the
original disk elicits the last-mentioned message. As a matter of
desperation I decided to reformat C: (via Windows Task Manager, which is
about the only thing that works). Unfortunately I can't even do that as C:
contains XP. I guess the easiest thing to do would be to buy a new PC (mine
is six years old).
Thanks for your help

Kafka wrote:Why did I reinstall Windows? I found that my PC was freezing a few minutes
after opening Windows. A short time before the problem arose I had
installed
various Comodo security programs and I thought that they might have
corrupted Windows (I am rather ignorant when it comes to such things). I
therefore reinstalled XP from the original disk. A computer technician
told
me that my six year old hard drive was probably defunct. To cut a long
story short, I eventually discovered that the problem had arisen because I
had plugged my new Microsoft Multimedia Wireless and Mouse into the second
USB socket. Once I had plugged it into a spare port on my 4 port USB hub
the problem was solved (though my defragmenter revealed that C drive was
shockingly fragmented).
It appears that I now have IE6 Service Pack 1, and I have been unable to
update to Service Pack 2. I ran winver and discovered that my WinXP was
SP1
(specifically Version 5.1, Service Pack 1).
NOTE: before reinstalling Windows I was using IE7, which is a bit
puzzling.
ALSO: Windows Update tells me that I am not up to date, but when I try
and
install all the files it requires as important I am informed that the
installations were unsuccessful.

Did you format & reinstall or do a Repair Install?

is installed:

You must be running WinXP SP2 to install IE7.

On checking I find I have IE6 SP1 but cannot update to SP2 or Explorer
7.
I
have Windows XP Version 5.1 (this was on the disk I used to re-install
Windows).
