RE: Welcome Screen changed to classic logon

I have not seen any other recent reports of McAfee conflicting with other
updates outside of updating to IE7 causing the McAfee updater to Fail. The
windows UI message and other new issues occurring after a system restore
along with the failure to correct the welcome screen issue is most
disturbing, this is may be indicative of widespread windows system files
damage, including severe registry corruption. This is frequently related to
some type of virus and/or adware infection(s) but can also occur from a
variety of other causes. Infection can happen despite McAfee's presence if it
invaded before McAfee's signature file was upgraded to recognize the
intruder, then some will actually attack your AntiViral program to disable
updates, corupt or disable some functions and write a certificate for
themselves as a trusted file/program. The first thing I would do is to back
up all your personal files and irreplaceable data to removable media, another
computer, etc. If you have an external hard drive, tape drive, etc. you can
use windows backup to backup your files or just manually copy. As a
preliminary step we can rule out file system structure problems with a disk
scan. If you are unfamiliar right click your hard drive in My Computer and
select Properties. Click on the tools tab and click "Check Now" under
Error-checking, select the automatically fix file system option and scan.

Next lets address the infection possibility, since there may be extensive
corruption in it go ahead and uninstall all of McAfee thru Add/Remove
programs, making sure you manually delete any McAfee folders in Program Files
left behind after the uninstall process. If the uninstall fails which can
commonly occur if it has been attacked, then download and run the McAfee
uninstall tool from here:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Afterwards verify the folder removal in Program Files as above. Then
reinstall, update and scan your computer with McAfee. You may also benefit
from downloading, installing, updating and scanning with the trial version of
AVG antispyware which has a very aggressive scan engine and detects more then
just spyware. That can be downloaded from here:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/crp/0?prd=triasw

If you find evidence of infection there are good sites that provide free
assistance on getting to a clean system, Major Geeks and Castle Cops to name
a few, go to their support forums, malware removal sections and look for
something like start here or start - read/run first as your entry point. They
will also advise on repairing the damage to windows caused by the infection
and you can disregard the rest of my post.

If there is no indication of infection there are a couple methods for
repairing widespread corruption of windows system files since thev system
restore failed to correct your system(although you first could try going back
to an earlier restore point). If you have your XP install disk or
manufacturers recovery disk that includes a copy of XP you can perform an
inplace upgrade/repair install of XP, the instructions can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us

If you still experiance problems you may need to utilize the most drastic
measure which is to perform a full destructive format and a complete
reinstall of XP, you will also have to reinstall all programs including
McAfee if you use this method. Please be aware that some manufacturers
include a recovery partition on the hard drive that may permit either an
inplace reinstall or complete reformat and install of windows from a recovery
or restore utility. Some may even include programs to allow you to backup
your files for reinstall after a windows repair, check your user manual or
the manufacturers web site to see if any of these options apply to you.

Irregardless of which method is used, as I stated above make sure you back
up all personal data and verify its integrity prior to the undertaking. Also
irregardless of which method is used rerun microsoft updates afterwards until
you verify no additional updates are needed.
I hope this can be of some benefit to you - Charlie

I followed your instructions and restored my system to a date prior to
installing the updates. And, yes, I am running XP. After restarting my
system, I had multiple errors with McAfee Suite. Basically, I had to
reinstall many of the products as they had missing components.

I have gotten McAfee back up and don't know whether I should uninstall
window updates as it appears they are messing with components of McAfee
Suite. I still have the classic logon window with black screen. However,
now I am getting an error message "randomly" that indicates Windows UI unable
to load, program will shut down". When asked to send error report, I click
on "send" and then the same error window pops up about 7 times, each time I
click on send, then finally goes away.

Also, I have tried the "switch users" instead of logging off (which worked
before the updates) and the system hangs indefinitely.

Any suggestions???

I assume you are using XP.
Go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Ensure "restore my computer....." is ticked and hit next. Select the date
that the upate occurred and if multiple entries are present highlight the one
labeled software distribution service. Follow the prompts to begin the
restore. After restart manually run windows or microsoft update and when the
the check is done "unselect all" and then manualy select and install each
update individually. This will identify the one producing the problem so we
can research it further or they may install one at a time without a problem.

After installing recent updates (not sure which one caused problem) the
Welcome screen with user accounts does not load. Specifically, the classic
logon prompt with a black background is now displayed when logging on. I
have checked my settings and the Welcome Screen option is selected. I have
also researched on Microsoft.com and found a "fix" by installing XP SP2.
However, I am already running it and no current updates that I have not
already installed are available.

Have you experienced this problem? If so, have you found a solution?
