Shortcut for turning alerts off:
Control Panel - Security Center - Change the way Security Center
alerts me - Turn off
My problem is that I use 56K modem connection, and can't afford to do
automatic updates. I've tried to turn it off on all documented ways,
but still nothing. Only the 3rd step (in previous message) turned it
off for good.

Won't that cause Security Center and its 3rd party replacements to
believe that spyware or a virus are running?

If you have strange problems with automatic updates (akamai :), and
you've done everything to disable it, but it still does it's dirty
job, here is the solution:
1) Control Panel - Automatic Updates - Turn off Automatic Updates
2) Services - Automatic Updates - Disable
3) If Automatic Update still connects to Akamai Networks, this will
fix it for good :)
Save text that follows as temp.reg file, and then double click it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
\AU]
"AUOptions"=dword:00000002
"AutoInstallMinorUpdates"=dword:00000000
"NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000001
