Are the XP install files perhaps on a second (maybe hidden) partition on the hard drive?
OR, if you have a CD with the same version of XP, and you have the Key (normally on the outside of the case in a sticker) for his system, you can use any CD and his Key to do the re-install.

Looks like your friend has multiple issues. I'd suggest doing a
full AV scan, a full malware scan, then an XP Repair install
(followed by the mandatory re-install of SP2).
