Darryl,
See if anything here makes sense/helps :
Systems that have changed the default Access Control List permissions on the %windir%\registration directory may experience various problems after you install the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051 for COM+ and MS DTC
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909444
I need two more days of studying to understand that page, Darryl. ;)

I've been installing the High-Priority Updates one by one, trying to determine which Windows Update is causing my system to bluescreen on restart. I have determined that KB 902400 is causing the error. After I install the 902400 security update, I get the following Stop error on a blue screen:.
STOP: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
The image ole32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum
After this error occurs, I cannot start the computer in safe mode, and the "Last known good configuration" will not fix the problem either.
Specifically, what happened is I ran system repair after the crash (an in place upgrade using a Windows XP SP2 slipstream disc), and the system started. Then installed the 902400 update, and then I got the c0000221 Stop error again. I then need to reinstall the operating system.
Thanks very much for reading this, and for any suggestions!!
