Rename the following files:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine
Advantage\data\data.dat

ANd if you have Office

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Office Genuine
Advantage\data\data.dat

Then run MGADiag.exe (Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool). If you
don't have it,download it from MS web-site. This will re-check and build
the data.dat files.

Sad to say, I'm not the first, but my 2.5 year old copy of XP Pro SP2 is
suddenly "not genuine" according to the latest WGA (12/07).
I went and installed all the updates and rebooted as directed. I started
Media Player 10 and it said there were updates so I clicked okay. Well it
installed MP-11 even though the banner at the bottom of the page said
10.0.0.5262 or something like that. After rebooting it took me to a MP-11
screen saying I had to Validate (again). I cancelled it, and uninstalled
MP-11 and it rolled back to MP-10, or so I thought. After rebooting as
directed MP-10 wouldn't run (internal application error) so I went to MS
to
download MP-10 again. When the Validation started it failed and told me my
copy wasn't genuine and may be counterfeit, and for only $149 I can get it
"Validated" by MS.
Can someone tell me the files I need to delete/fix so I can stop this
damned
annoying balloon that keeps popping up.
I tried the validation tool and it showed the last 5 digits as I entered
them more than two years ago off of the genuine Win XP CD/cert. (Yep, I
got
the CD and the T-shirt).
Can I go and restore a known good setting from November and eliminate this
problem, or is there a file or registry entry that needs to be
neutralized?
Any help is deeply appreciated...
