I don't know why you got a return code. You should have received a message
stating that the Entry Point cannot be found. It doesn't give any number.
What bothers me is that you cannot open the Properties for Automatic Updates
Service.
The Property Page is controlled by this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WUAUSERV\0000
In the right panel you should see:
ClassGUID REG_SZ
{8ECC055D-047F-11D1-A537-0000F8753ED1}
which is the default for all services in SERVICE.MSC.
Can you open Properties for any one else.
If you wish to look how this operates, Automatic Updates has an entry in the
registry called wuauserv under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
In that key there is another key: Enum that points to the LEGACY_WUAUSERV I
mentioned above.
If you look at the other keys in Services, you will see a pattern as far as
setup.
I would check those and compare with WUAUSERV and see if any in WUAUSERV are
corrupted.
Have you performed a CHKDSK /R recently to ensure that the filesystem is in
order?

To Mr. New Science:
I re-tried to re-register Wuauserv.dll. It failed with the error message:
DllRegisterServer C:\Windows\System32\Wuauserv.dll failed. Return code
was:
0x80070005.
I checked the netsvcs reference in the registry and both BITSand wuauserv
were listed.
Control Panel shows Framework ver 1.1 with a subsequent Hotfix (separate
listing in the programs list. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework has been
around since the system was built. I do not know how to distinguish that
I
installed ANY .NET/Framework updates. How can I find out which updates
referred to this version of the .NET Framework?

Trye re-registering c:\windows\system32\wuauserv.dll. If that fails then
the the following key may be screwed up:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost
in the right panel, there is an entry for netsvcs.
Double click on it and make sure that BITS and wuauserv are both in the
list
(scroll all the way down).
If they are missing, add them separately on aline to themselves, and then
reboot.
If this is the problem, you are the third person this week I have had to
instruct to add these (or one of these) to this key.
I don't know what's going on. How long ago did you inetall an update for
FrameWork? I'm trying to track this down why these entries are being
deleted.

I would like to run Automatic Updates. But every time I try Windows
Update
or Microsoft Update, I get an error message 0x80070422 that a service
is
not
running. BITS and Event Log are running. Automatic Updates service is
NOT
running. When I try to start the service, I get an Error 5 message that
access is denied. I've tried re-registering "regsvr32 wuaueng.dll"
unsuccessful with error code 80070005.
Any ideas on what keys I should look for in the registry?
