Did you install the Active X Control by clicking on the yellow bar see
this
link?
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx?ln=en&returnurl=http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en&muopt=6
If the first link is broken try this one

I have set out below the way to manually download updates. This was
written for the normal situation but you will be invited to install the
Active X Control. I think your problem is that you did not.
To get to Windows Update try this route. Select Start, Help and Support,
Keep your computer up to date with Windows Update and double click
Custom. The system then check on you and then your system to see
what you need. At the end of this stage under Select by Type will be the
number of Updates available by category. Click on Critical and it will
list
the details of those available. Check the option for each and every one
and then click on Install. You will then be offered the option to Save
to
Disk or to Run. Select Run. The process is then fully automated until it
says hopefully Successful or Finished. You then restart the machine.

Thanks Gerry for the advice. However, I followed instructions but when
I got
to the programs section there was no manage add-ons to select. There
was only
stuff like HTML editor, e-mail, newsgroups etc.
I don't believe I was ever able to download the service pack 2, I
think it
is still service pack 1. Or maybe I don't have the right edition of
internet
explorer? The link you posted mentioned IE 6.
Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks again.

I have little knowedge of computers, and need help bad. I have
windows
XP.
Version I think is 5.1.2600 service pack 1. (I could never down
load
Service
pack 2)
Everytime I try to down load up dates, things crash and I have to
re-install windows. This works sometimes, other times I have to
re-install
more than one before it works. But every few days the screen I'm
working on
disappears and goes to a page that says some exception has occured
and
windows had to shut down . I then have to re-install everything
again.
After re-installing everything Dec 9/06, I tried to down load
updates
and
got the error code 0x8DDD0004. I found a list of error codes and
definitions
somewhere on this site, but there was no explanation of this code.
Help please.
