I sure wish other Users practiced safe hex as you do Steve.
Now if we could just track down 'what' is leaving an MSJVM file(s) on the system ... we know it can't be IE7 nor any MS product because they are not allowed to include the MSJVM by legal agreement with Sun.
I'm wondering if it's just one file being downloaded or that one file is being misinterperted by WU as being part of the MSJVM ?
I still have one OS that has the MSJVM installed for testing purposes. I'll check the files associated with it so maybe we can come up with 'something'.

Saw your posted fix for this issue, Steve. I'm wondering just exactly what downloaded some MSJVM files to the system ? Could have been a website ... let's hope it's not malicious sites attempting to reinstall the MSJVM version that was susceptible to CoolWebSearch infestations.

First off, the java autoupdate mechanism does NOT remove older, vulnerable versions. Strongly suggest they be uninstalled via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Just leave the most current package installed.

Also, open the Java applet in CP. By Default it should open to the General page.
Now click the Settings button.
First, set the cache size to 5 MB
Now click the View Applications button at the top
What is listed ? Close the window and then click the View Applets button.
What is listed there ? Close that window and then cick the Delete Files button. Click OK.

Please let me know if KB816093 is offered after doing the above.

What Tom said, Marshall. That version of Sun java is EXTEMELY vulnerable to what is known as Vundo/Virtumonde.
It's possible that the Sun java cache is populated with infected java files. Uninstall it ASAP from Add/Remove Programs and then install the latest version from the link Tom provided.

" . If you are running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 SP4 without the Microsoft VM installed, you cannot install this update to the Microsoft VM. If you try to install this update to the Microsoft VM on a computer that does not already have the Microsoft VM installed that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 SP4, you receive the following message:

Microsoft VM
This setup will only upgrade over an existing version of the Microsoft VM.

If you click OK, you receive the following message:

Microsoft VM
The installation is complete.

This message is incorrect. The Microsoft VM is not installed if you do not already have the Microsoft VM installed. "

Since there is no MS VM installed, the update will always fail.
Get the older, vulnerable uninstalled and install the latest version.
Then we'll see if KB816903 is offered again.

That's definitely NOT a needed update since the MSJVM is not installed .... unless an application or program installed some type of MSJVM file.
Can you provide us with the specific KB number of the update ?

Is there any Sun Java package installed ? Look in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. It (they) will be listed as
J2SE Runtime Environment x.x Update x (the x are for the version and update to said version numbers)
