Re: Microsoft VM

Well I did go back and see what I downloaded. The only thing I downloaded
other than I.E.7 was the windows live 3d map thing. Which I removed. I
really didn t think it was all that great for the amount of disk space it
took lol, for me anyway, good program to play with. Otherwise, I am very
careful about what I download, and where I go on the internet, more of a
news junkie than a surf new sites junkie, so really doubt a rouque web page
was encountered. If it was just me I would just blow it off to chance, but,
seeing others with the same problem in same time frame makes me wonder. We
all have something in common.

Saw your posted fix for this issue, Steve. I'm wondering just exactly what
downloaded some MSJVM files to the system ? Could have been a website ...
let's hope it's not malicious sites attempting to reinstall the MSJVM
version that was susceptible to CoolWebSearch infestations.

First, thanks for helping.
For security sake I do not allow auto update on the java, I usually just
check every now and then manually to see if there is an update ( I also
keep up to date on tech journals daily so I can update if there is a
security issue someone has found). Also, each time I find an update I
will completely remove the old via add remove and go to the Sun site to
download and install new version. And, since I have a 6mb connection and
a fairly fast computer, I have enable caching unchecked in the applet
panel, which by the way has no listings so, therefore, user cache and
system cache are empty. Sun Java works and works great. I have taken it
completely out again and gone to a test site (dslreports.com speed test)
,they have a java applet, and nothing there. I have installed the new
java again and tested, and java works great. This is not about the Sun
Java it works. I just don't have WJVM on this computer, never have, and
therefore, should not need an update for it. Windows update though, is
persisting that I need the security update and when I allow it, nothing
happens and next time after reboot WU still says I need it . This is not
really a big deal, I am just perplexed by the puzzle. I also, notice
another question on this group dated 11/9 by gypsyladyinma, same problem.
I am wondering if this is systematic configuration that many us out there
have that WU is seeing. Again this just started in the last few days.
Something is different.

Steve,

First off, the java autoupdate mechanism does NOT remove older,
vulnerable versions. Strongly suggest they be uninstalled via Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel. Just leave the most current package
installed.

Also, open the Java applet in CP. By Default it should open to the
General page.
Now click the Settings button.
First, set the cache size to 5 MB
Now click the View Applications button at the top
What is listed ? Close the window and then click the View Applets button.
What is listed there ? Close that window and then cick the Delete Files
button. Click OK.

Please let me know if KB816093 is offered after doing the above.

I have the same problem that started today on Windows update. I have
XP SP2 home OEM from Jan 06. And also, have the new Java 5.09 that has
been on my machine since it was updated from 5.06. Also, have I.E. 7
that has been on here a couple of weeks with no problem. MSJVM is not
installed per the command line. Again this just popped up today, is
this a glitch with update? Nothing has been downloaded since I.E.7 went
gold. Java test sites show I have the latest versions. I.E. 7 advanced
options show use Java (Sun) and is checked. Set program access and
defaults shows, use current java machine for java and is checked although
it does have a radio button for MVM that is unchecked.

What Tom said, Marshall. That version of Sun java is EXTEMELY
vulnerable to what is known as Vundo/Virtumonde.
It's possible that the Sun java cache is populated with infected java
files. Uninstall it ASAP from Add/Remove Programs and then install the
latest version from the link Tom provided.

From the MS KB816093 article -

" . If you are running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000
SP4 without the Microsoft VM installed, you cannot install this update
to the Microsoft VM. If you try to install this update to the Microsoft
VM on a computer that does not already have the Microsoft VM installed
that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 SP4,
you receive the following message:

Microsoft VM
This setup will only upgrade over an existing version of the Microsoft
VM.

If you click OK, you receive the following message:

Microsoft VM
The installation is complete.

This message is incorrect. The Microsoft VM is not installed if you do
not already have the Microsoft VM installed. "

Since there is no MS VM installed, the update will always fail.
Get the older, vulnerable uninstalled and install the latest version.
Then we'll see if KB816903 is offered again.

816093 is the update number.

I have Jave 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 installed.

"MowGreen [MVP]" wrote:

Marshall,

That's definitely NOT a needed update since the MSJVM is not
installed .... unless an application or program installed some type
of MSJVM file.
Can you provide us with the specific KB number of the update ?

Is there any Sun Java package installed ? Look in Add/Remove Programs
in the Control Panel. It (they) will be listed as
J2SE Runtime Environment x.x Update x (the x are for the version
and update to said version numbers)

At the Command Prompt type in

Is there a java version listed ? If so, what is it ?
Now type in

exit
Press Enter

Please post back with what came up from typing in "jview" at the
Command Prompt.

This does not bother me, but the fact that my system constantly

unsuccessful each time is annoying.
