Suggest you first stop the AU service and Disable it from running on Startup via the Services console
Right click My Computer either on the Desktop or on the Start Menu and choose Manage.
Double click on Services and Applications in the right frame
Double click on Services
Double click Automatic Updates
Click the Stop button if it's Started
Set the Startup type to Disabled
Click Apply, OK

Navigate to the WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download folder and
DELETE all contents.
Restart the system.
Is the yellow icon popping up ? No.
Now go back and reenable Automatic Updates so that it loads on Startup by setting it to Automatic.
Restart the system.

Is the yellow icon popping up ? If so, then STOP the AU service and delete the CONTENTS of the Software Distribution folder.
[NOTE: This will remove the update history that shows on the WU site]
Restart Automatic Updates from the Services console.

That's the last time I'm going to repeat those steps. If you do not want to do them, then don't.

You do NOT need to run the blocker. The next time you're prompted to download IE7, open the automatic update icon on the Task Bar by clicking on it. Uncheck the box next to IE7, click OK, and then put a check in the box that says " Do not show this update again " (or something to that effect)

IE7 will not be reoffered.

The reason that IE7 is showing as 0 bytes is that nothing has been downloaded yet until you approve it.

If you experience issues with other updates showing as 0 bytes after they've been downloaded, then you will need to remove the contents of

WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download or,
you will have to stop the Automatic Updates service, open the Software Distribution folder and delete ALL files and folders.
Then restart the AU service.

To stop AU go to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv

Click OK
To restart it Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK

Clear now ?

I may give that a try and then turn Automatic Updates back on to fully automatic and see what happens. Bottom line is I can't help but think that our problems have something to do with IE7 wanting to download automatically.

That may be present because of IE 7. As to what to what it represents, I haven't a clue.

I have not yet downloaded IE 7 so I don't think this line from the log has anything to do with that. I'll search the forum to see if I can find out what it means.

Set it to " Notify me but don't automatically downloa or install ... " since you have it set to Download. That way you can check to see what the updates are prior to downloading them. Click the links provided to decide if the update is *needed*. ALL CRITICAL security updates should be downloaded and installed.

IMHO, by choosing which updates you want downloaded there's less chance that the contents of the Download folder will become corrupted/damaged.

BTW, IE 7 is NOT on my system yet. Will wait until everything shakes out prior to installing it. I may have to install it on a VPC of XP to see what issues it brings up when doing updates.

By the way, I have Automatic Update set to download and let me choose when to install. When I had a problem again today with the 0% thing, I went onto the Microsoft site to check for updates and supposedly the new IE7 is the only one I "need."
