Re: System tray icon disappears at 0%

Yikes! Sorry, MowGreen. I didn't realize I was being such a dope. If you
will remember, I admitted in my very first posting that I am indeed an idiot
where the computer is concerned. ANYway, I did follow your more explicit
directions this time and I am at least rid of the annoying yellow shield icon
taunting me with a 0% download message. Honestly, I do appreciate your help.
I'll now tuck my tail and slink away . . .

Did you follow the steps laid out to clear the Download folder ?
Did you follow the steps laid out to clear the Software Distribution
folder if the above did not resolve the issue ?

Suggest you first stop the AU service and Disable it from running on
Startup via the Services console
Right click My Computer either on the Desktop or on the Start Menu and
choose Manage.
Double click on Services and Applications in the right frame
Double click on Services
Double click Automatic Updates
Click the Stop button if it's Started
Set the Startup type to Disabled
Click Apply, OK

Navigate to the WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download folder and
DELETE all contents.
Restart the system.
Is the yellow icon popping up ? No.
Now go back and reenable Automatic Updates so that it loads on Startup
by setting it to Automatic.
Restart the system.

Is the yellow icon popping up ? If so, then STOP the AU service and
delete the CONTENTS of the Software Distribution folder.
[NOTE: This will remove the update history that shows on the WU site]
Restart Automatic Updates from the Services console.

That's the last time I'm going to repeat those steps. If you do not want
to do them, then don't.

Okay, I won't run the IE7 blocker. It appears you think that's a bad idea.

I'm really sorry if I've confused the situation here, but my problem is not
that I get "IE7 showing 0 bytes." I have never been prompted to download
IE7, so I have never been given the opportunity to even check a box that says
"Do not show this update again." I just assumed the problem I am having with
Automatic Updates might involve IE7 because I went to the Microsoft Updates
site, scanned my computer for needed critical updates (after it appeared that
AU was not working on my computer) and IE7 was the only update offered.

So, again, this is the problem: Yellow AU update icon appears in system
tray. Hover cursor over icon, get message about download progress being 0%.
Right click icon, nothing happens. Double click icon, nothing happens. Icon
disappears after 30 seconds or so.

I really do appreciate your pondering this convoluted train of thought, but
I think I will turn off AU altogether for now and just go to Microsoft's
Update site daily to check for critical updates and download them from there.

Agricola, if you come up with any new info on this would you please post it
here? Thanks.

You do NOT need to run the blocker. The next time you're prompted to
download IE7, open the automatic update icon on the Task Bar by clicking
on it. Uncheck the box next to IE7, click OK, and then put a check in
the box that says " Do not show this update again " (or something to
that effect)
Click OK
IE7 will not be reoffered.

The reason that IE7 is showing as 0 bytes is that nothing has been
downloaded yet until you approve it.

If you experience issues with other updates showing as 0 bytes after
they've been downloaded, then you will need to remove the contents of

WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download or,
you will have to stop the Automatic Updates service, open the Software
Distribution folder and delete ALL files and folders.
Then restart the AU service.

To stop AU go to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv

Click OK
To restart it Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK

Clear now ?

Hello. I'm kind of new to this user forum thing so I'm not sure if I should
be posting a reply to you, Agricola, or to MowGreen, but here is my update.
I still get the "downloading 0%" icon after changing Automatic Updates to
just notify but not download or install updates.

I, too, appear to only be "needing" the IE7 update, which I do not want.
That is why I changed Automatic Updates from fully automatic in the first
place. I noticed there is a link on the Microsoft site to download an IE7
Blocker Tookkit that supposedly blocks the automatic download but will allow
you to manually download it at a later time. I may give that a try and then
turn Automatic Updates back on to fully automatic and see what happens.
Bottom line is I can't help but think that our problems have something to do
with IE7 wanting to download automatically.

Here's the link to the IE7 Blocker Toolkit in case anyone is interested:

I have exactly the same problem as BXPS which has persisted over the same
period. As far as I can see, the only update waiting to be downloaded is
IE7. I thought that Microsoft are distributing this as a high-priority
update - isn't this the same as CRITICAL?

I would be happy to supply text from my WindowsUpdate Log but I thought that
at the moment this would only confuse the resolution of the originating
poster's problem. However, I did note the following in the log:

"2006-11-07 21:52:08 960 dd4 DnldMgr * Update is not allowed to download
due to regulation."

I understand that regulation is used by Microsoft to distribute the load on
the update servers, but like I said, this has been going on for several days
now.

I'll see what happens with that.

There's nothing in the log to indicate that there is an issue with
Microsoft Update. Did you delete the contents of the Download folder ?

If I did it was by accident -- I don't even know where that is.

2006-11-06 13:33:32 1160 9bc Setup Found non-managed non-WU Service

That may be present because of IE 7. As to what to what it represents, I
haven't a clue.

I have not yet downloaded IE 7 so I don't think this line from the log has
anything to do with that. I'll search the forum to see if I can find out
what it means.

Thanks for your help so far.

Set it to " Notify me but don't automatically downloa or install ... "
since you have it set to Download. That way you can check to see what
the updates are prior to downloading them. Click the links provided to
decide if the update is *needed*. ALL CRITICAL security updates should
be downloaded and installed.

There's nothing in the log to indicate that there is an issue with
Microsoft Update. Did you delete the contents of the Download folder ?
IMHO, by choosing which updates you want downloaded there's less chance
that the contents of the Download folder will become corrupted/damaged.

BTW, IE 7 is NOT on my system yet. Will wait until everything shakes out
prior to installing it. I may have to install it on a VPC of XP to see
what issues it brings up when doing updates.
Thanks for posting the log. I'd never seen this before
