Okay, I have changed the Automatic Update setting to notify but not download.
I'll see what happens with that.
There's nothing in the log to indicate that there is an issue with
Microsoft Update. Did you delete the contents of the Download folder ?
If I did it was by accident -- I don't even know where that is.

That may be present because of IE 7. As to what to what it represents, I
haven't a clue.
I have not yet downloaded IE 7 so I don't think this line from the log has
anything to do with that. I'll search the forum to see if I can find out
what it means.
Thanks for your help so far.

Set it to " Notify me but don't automatically downloa or install ... "
since you have it set to Download. That way you can check to see what
the updates are prior to downloading them. Click the links provided to
decide if the update is *needed*. ALL CRITICAL security updates should
be downloaded and installed.

IMHO, by choosing which updates you want downloaded there's less chance
that the contents of the Download folder will become corrupted/damaged.
BTW, IE 7 is NOT on my system yet. Will wait until everything shakes out
prior to installing it. I may have to install it on a VPC of XP to see
what issues it brings up when doing updates.
Thanks for posting the log. I'd never seen this before

By the way, I have Automatic Update set to download and let me choose when
to install. When I had a problem again today with the 0% thing, I went onto
the Microsoft site to check for updates and supposedly the new IE7 is the
only one I "need."
Here's what you asked for from the update log:

A week or so ago I noticed that when my Windows Update icon appears in the
system tray it will indicated 0% download and then disappear with nothing
further happening. When I searched the forum for an answer I found one that
said something about needing this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup
I believe I do have that key in my registry. Any other suggestions? (I'm a
real idiot about these things, by the way.)
