Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Rich, thanks. I guess I'll try the download link, as no update appears using
the normal MicrosoftUpdate. I suspect things really turned rotten due to a
hard crash/stop at failure time. For your information here's a summary of
other responses from a thread started Oct 10:

Try the following:
download and run the file at
http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip
for .NET 2.0

Log onto the Microsoft Update web site - custom - and reinstall .NET 2.0 -
after the reinstall select custom again and you should get 2 priority updates
- install both.

This worked for me - hope it helps

I am unable to install the latest security update to Framework 2.0 it fails
everytime.
I have tried to manual install with no success.

Thank you for your very good advice. I performed exactly what you have
written
and it worked for me like a charm. When I ran the file "cleanup_tool.exe" I
choose the option to cleanup ".NET Framework - All Versions".
Thanks again
Zeev

Bit of a problem with re-instal of .NET 2 due to an installation monitoring
program - disabled monitor prog and everything went fine

you so much! Worked great on two machines. Third machine did not need
the fix.

Curious though..

Three machines... All Legally Licensed installation CD's of Microsoft
Windows XP Professional (Three total). Found one difference...

First Machine... XP Professional with SP1 included on CD
updated to SP2 with the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD from Microsoft...
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770) would
not install... until using your method. Thanks!

Second Machine... another XP Professional with SP1 included on CD updated to
SP2 with the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD from Microsoft... Security Update
for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770) would not install...
until using your method. Thanks again!

Third Machine... XP Professional with SP2 included on CD. The Security
Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770) updated
successfully without having the change anything.

Only difference between the machines is the way SP2 had been installed. The
last time there was a security update for the Microsoft .NET Framework,
Version 2.0, I had to use a work around for the first and second machines
then as well but not the third machine. Go Figure. Not sure the relation or
why.
Thank you again for your help. :)

Thanks for the advice Rob. KB922770 finally installed!
I did the same as "zsmi":> clean up all versions. I have SP2. When I went
back to Microsoft Update, there were three (3) SP1 updates (1. KB886903, 2.
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, and 3. Microsoft .NET Framework
version 1.1). I went ahead and installed all udpdates.
Should I get SP1 updates when I have SP2? Did cleaning up all versions mess
things up of am I O.K.?

go to Downloads.Microsoft.com
download/save to a temp folder .NET 2.0 dated a few months ago

uninstall from add/remove your current .NET 2.0
reboot then install the current .NET you downloaded
return to update.Microsoft.com for the update

---

This worked after trying a "normal" install 3 times! Went to microsoft.com
then to download section and d/led the latest net 2.0, uninstalled the old
2.0, rebooted installed the new version, then went to microsoft update and lo
and behold!! It worked!!

You can reinstall the update in a lot of ways. The easiest is to run
'Windows Update' or 'Microsoft Update' from the 'Start' / 'All Prograns'
menu. Or you can follow the links to the security bulletin and use the
download link there to get just the framework package.

I may try to force a reinstall of Framework 2.0 next if I can find a patched
version.

I also put in an email help request to Microsoft and I haven't heard
anything there and it's coming up on 24 hours.

I had exactly the same problem. Solution according to message is to first try
and re-install the update. But I don't know how to do that.

Update history show the above. Trying to install the update hangs microsoft
update so hard it won't cancel, stop, be killed, allow a log-off or shutdown.
Anyone else had the problem or a solution?
