Thanks for your reply....

I've printed instructions for future reference and to perform as suggested.
I'l post back under the title "Unable to install ANY updates (contd)" to
advise if all now OK or otherwise.

Install issues with Automatic Updates *usually* result from corrupted
data in the Software Distribution folders. That or lack of disk space,
corruption of the download, etc.
Since the system didn't experience file corruption, then suggest you
empty out these 2 folders of all contents and then wait until the second
Tuesday of October to see if that resolved the issue -

WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Downloads

WINDOWS\Software Distribution\EventCache

You may need to show hidden files, folders, and system files to view
those folders :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Delete the content of those 2 folders. If that doesn't resolve the issue
than you will have to stop the Automatic Updates service and then delete
the contents of

WINDOWS\Software Distribution\DataStore

Restart the service when you've done that.

MowGreen,

Thanks for prompt reply. OS is XP SP2. Downloaded KB925486 from download
site and installed no problem. Went to control panel\Add remove and via
"change" button associated with windows defender, downloaded and installed
latest definition (KB915597)

Re-run of windows update now shows no critical/high priority updates.

From this I conclude that I don't have a problem with my PC per se. Problem
thus lies with the (auto) update process and/or associated files on PC ???

You fail to mention if the OS is XP SP1 or SP2.
Go here for KB925486 and click the appropriate link for the SP that is
installed :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-055.mspx

Save it, do not run it from it's location. Close IE.
Install it.
If it fails to install there will be a KB925486.log located in the
WINDOWS directory (folder). Open that log and copy&paste it into your
reply, please.

I can download but not install any criticals/high priority updates via
windows update site. I get the following reported message...

Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being
downloaded or installed
Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that
doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem.

I tried install again but same result and the troubleshooter, if that what
it is meant to be, is of no use.

The (current) updates in question are:

KB925486 : Security Update for Windows XP and
KB915597 : Definition Update for Windows Defender (Beta)

Appreciate any help in resolving

.
