Re: unable to install [and uninstall] service pack 2

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi realcestmoi
thank you for your time and trouble
ran chkdsk stage 1,2,3 all completed.seems ok.computer screen moved from
completion and then onto normal windows opening programme.
In add/remove programmes it states Windows service pack2 but no file size,
also shown is a number of sp2 hotfixes. when pressing the remove button for
sp2 I ended up bacl in the loop of cannot find specified file.
This may help--- when installing sp2 I suffered a power failure. Your note
referred to an attached file. where do I find that .
Thanks again

Hi there,

I meant under settings> control panel > add remove programs, there is a
checkbox there to show (or not show) installed updates, mark the box there
to show installed updates and see if Sp2 shows than.
See the attached file and look where the mouse pointer is pointing please.

You have to run a disk scan to check on the bad block(s) open a dos box and
type chkdsk /f and enter choose Y(es) for the disk to bec hecked at windows
restart.

Hi,

Deleting or renaming the Catroot2 folder will most likely fix this
problem, I have created a batch file that does this for you.

Go to
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database". Download and run it.
