Updates FAILING all OVER the PLACE...

Hi All,
Say, WHAT the heck is going on with MS Updates?
I have 50 XP Pro PCs in one office and then in other locations, many
more.
Users are complaining that "SUDDENLY" they cannot UPDATE. Error is the
"Updates were unable to be successfully installed".

Error log does not list an 'error' -
Renaming CatRoot2 and Softwaredistribution does nothing -
BIT is running (even set it to Auto and made sure it was running) -
Automatic updates 'is' running.

Not using WSUS although this is beginning to make me rethink that.

Ideas are gratefully sought!
