Jeff,
You're referring to the steps laid out here ? :
You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error 0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941
The HOSTS file is located in WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Show hidden files, folders, and system files :

Then use either My Computer, or Windows Explorer and navigate to the HOSTS file. It's possible that the command was not copied correctly.

The problem is when I click on Microsoft Update, then Express Install (or Custom) I get an "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view..." with an Error number 0x80072EFD. I've run through all the self-help option to no avail. The problem I have found while running "notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" is that there is no file associated with this command. All that happens is that a blank Notepad doc pops up. Hoping that this is the problem and that I can get this file. Help!.
