I guess I will never find the reason for this error. I did however find a
work-around to get past it. Since I have worked in the IT sector for a while
and I run a few systems at home, I pulled down the SP2 upgrade from the
Administrators section. When running it locally it did not encounter the
error, and loaded SP2 without incident. Now I am fully functional, with the
latest MS upgrades.
It seems the on-line installation is fine, except when you encounter a
problem like this. And, there is a difference between the dowloads provided
for on-line use and those provided for use on a local network.
I would like to thank those who did take the time to provide suggestions,
even if they did not apply to my particular situation.
Smiling again,
Cheshirecat

The software you suggested provides the options
to delete or ignore, not to fix the issues.
Do you know what this meant?
I was guessing OP was just getting confused by some advertising
on the search site you used.
Hmm... there's no advertising there today.
Perhaps he should take another look?

x@y, thanks for trying to assist, I do appreciate you replying. Unfortunately
I think this is not the answer to my problem, and question the effectiveness
of this software for my situation.
I also downloaded the software to take it for a test run before purchasing
it. I used it to run multiple scans (4-5) of my system in sequence, intiating
the next scan immediately following the completion of the previous scan. The
I found the results very interesting. A more accurate term would be
inconsistent, since I received varying numbers of errors reported with each
scan. The identifications increased and decreased from scan to scan.
I think my problem may be more closely related to what I do not have, rather
than what I do, on my system. The software you suggested provides the options
to delete or ignore, not to fix the issues.
I think I need to find a means of correcting the entries I have, which may
ultimately mean wiping my system and reloading <cringe>, but thanks anyway.

Looking for resolution for a failure to install of Service Pack 2 for Win
XP
Pro (Error Code: 0x80240017). I have no issuess downloading and installing
any other Updates from MS. This has been going on since SP2 became
available
on the web site. I finally recently "upgraded" using the original disk, to
prevent wiping my data, then pulled the Updates again. All went well except
the SP2 installation still fails, early during the intallation process. I
really don't want to wipe my drive if I don't have to (using mirroring on
second drive)
Can anyone help me save my current setup?
