Re: Missing dll problem KB920872 + Creative Audio HQ

Well, I guess I corrected it. I uninstalled the update, went to the MS
knowledgebase site via the link, downloaded it, installed it, and rebooted.
The icon came back, as expected. I clicked on the icon, and selected
download. It started to download, then ended, and the icon went away, and MS
Update shows no updates needed, and history shows I installed 920872 4 times!
But, all appears okay, so...

Thanks anyway.

I am not having this problem, but here is what is happening to me with this
update. I had just finished installing the latest 7 critical updates (did
not include 920872) tonight. After the reboot, I got another notification
that updates were ready for my computer. I proceeded, and 920872 was
indicated as already downloaded and ready to install. So I did. When
finished, the notification icon did not go away. I rebooted (jic) and upon
restart, the icon reappears, notifying me that updates are ready. It is
again 920872! This puppy will NOT go away...

Methinks there is a problem...

I allowed my system to automatically apply all updates last night, and
it wouldn't boot afterwards....

I tried Last Known and a variety of Safe Mode options, and still
nothing.

I then removed some hardware from my machine and eventually got it to
come up in Safe Mode....ran a system restore to before the autoupdate.
And, later did an update without this patch.

At least things seem to have rebooted alright.

What did I remove? A USB Flash Drive (SanDisk Cruzer Micro 2GB), an
iPod Shuffle (1GB) and my Gen 3 iPod (40GB).

A quick thought....the Gen3 iPod is connected to the firewire port on
my soundcard (Sound Blaster Audigy 2 - Dell (OEM)).

David,

If the system is not experiencing the symptoms as described here :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920872
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2):
· When you resume audio playback after you pause it, the audio playback does not
play the audio file from the correct position. Instead, the audio playback resumes from
a random position on the audio track.
· You randomly receive the following Stop error message during audio file playback:
Stop 0x0000004E
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
· You randomly receive a Stop error message when you try to capture audio.

then DO NOT install the update.

Info for anyone using Creative Audio HQ software and finding the following
problem:

On successive reboots after I installed KB920872 I received an error of
"Cannot find ahqman.dll in the specified location".

A hard boot as opposed to a soft reboot cured the problem.

This sounds rather like Percussive Maintenance - The fine art of whacking
the crap out of an electronic device to get it to work again, but I can
assure you it's not...
