Re: Many KBxxxxx.log failure files after trying to patch SP2

Forget systeminfo. As long as the updates are installed, that's what matters.
The listing is in alphabetical order, thus, SP2 is below the updates.
Now, some of the updates may have failed. There should be 60.
That's why I requested you copy what systeminfo contained so that you wouldn't have to do it manually.
There are automated tools that will inform you of which updates are still needed. One of them is the MBSA:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsa2/default.mspx
The link to download it is on that page.
Recommend that you post back with what it identifies as missing prior to doing anything further.

Let's see if KB922616 can install from a manual download :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a6e2cb0a-146f-4300-95cb-7078ce9f9844&displaylang=en
Save it and then close all open programs, browsers, etc.
Now try to install it.

It says that 'systeminfo' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

I tried running this command from the default documents and settings prompt and the c:\ prompt. Same error.

Im on XP Home. Does that not have this option?

However, I went back into add/remove programs, and clicked the "show updates" box, and all 54 now showed up, and said they are intalled and on. Thank god.

any ideas as to why I got so many failures in my logs?

I did indeed notice that the list of the updates preceeded my listing for service pack 2. Maybe the updates were for correcting problems with SP1, and that's why I got those errors? (As this was a fresh reinstall of windows home, and did not, in fact, have SP1 on there.) Still, since I installed SP2 first, before I went to get the updates, I'm wondering why it did that.

Anyway. I'm thinking on upgrading to Pro. I really need it, anyway. Maybe COMPUSA has a labor day sale today and I can catch a break on a deal.

The KBxxxxxx.logs are created during the install of updates. Nothing amiss there.

In addition, when I go into my add/remove programs, the only program that is listed is the windows 1.3 installer, and the windows service pack 2. Should the additional subsequent patches be listed as well?

Did you put a check in the box to " Show updates " ?

Go to Start > Run > type in

cmd
Click OK
At the Command Prompt type in

systeminfo
Press Enter

What is listed next to HotFix(s) ?
You can copy what's in the command window by pressing CTRL C, paste that into a text file, and then remove entries except for HotFix(s).
Then post the info into your reply, please.

Hi. Here is my scenario. I had to reformat my hard drive. I reinstalled XP Home, and because of the fact that I am on dial up, my friend provided me with the SP 2 on disk. I ran the install program, and everything worked fine. I then logged onto windows update to download all of the patches. (count 54). I received no errors about downloads and installs. They said they all installed correctly, as far as I remember, and I restarted my computer. However, I have 54 of those KB****.log files in my windows directory, and they all have errors in it such as stating that the update.ver file is not correct, and that files such as sp4.cab does not exist.

In addition, when I go into my add/remove programs, the only program that is listed is the windows 1.3 installer, and the windows service pack 2. Should the additional subsequent patches be listed as well? I know that when I go to the windowsupdate site, it says that I don't need to install anything new.

Do any of you think that the problem was that it was a fresh install, that didn't even have SP1 on it yet, or was it because I installed from a disk? Do I actually have these updates and the log files aren't anything to worry about?

I have posted below an example of one of the 54 KB******.log files. I also have the windowsupdate.log file, but it is HUGE, so I'm not sure what to post regarding that. Please let me know if anyone needs to see anything from it. I've looked it over, and haven't found anything, to my knowledge, that seems ominous. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry this log is so long, I'm not sure what, if anything, should have been left out.

I will be posting the log in a nested reply to this post.
