Re: SP2 Will Not Install

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Judy,

Sorry I didn't get back to your sooner.
Do NOT delete the setupapi.log. It will overwrite old entries so there's no need to.

You need to add System and Administrators to the entire HKCR hive instead of hunting down all the subkeys. Then *remove* them after SP2 installs.
PLEASE ... backup the registry before making any changes, OK ?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Right click HKCR and choose Permissions.
Click Add.
Click the Advanced button > then click Find Now
Click on Administrators, then click OK.
Click OK.
Put a check next to Full Control and Read, click Apply.
Now go back and add System with Full Control and Read.
Close the registry editor.

*** If anyone else is following this thread, please know that incorrect editing of the registry can render the system as useable as a paperweight, a bowling ball, or agita.
*** ALWAYS make a backup before editing the registry ***
* Know * how to restore that backup before attempting registry edits.

Oh...I think I answered one of my own questions: Add Administrators and System under the subkey PersistantHandler, right?

Hi MowGreen.

There is no WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles folder. Can or should I delete the setupapi.log?

In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive, Everyone is the only one listed in Permissions. It has Full Control and Read already checked. How do I add Administrators and System?
If I click Advanced, under the Owner tab, under “Current owner of this item” is Administrator.
under “Change owner to:” Administrator and Judy are listed.

I am the only user. I am Administrator and Judy. In User Accounts in the Control Panel, it has Judy Computer Administrator (and the Guest). Administrator per se does not show, only in Safe Mode.
I Login when windows starts using Judy. Do I need to take the login off to install SP2?

Thanks so much for you help. It "sounds" so simple. ha ha :))

Judy,

First off, empty your UserAccount Temp folder located at
Documents and Settings\<YourUserName>\Local Settings\Temp

Make sure there is no WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles folder.
If there is, delete it.
Then defragment the system.

#E008 Setting registry value HKCR\.ivf\PersistentHandler
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.

Next, go to Start > Run > type in

regedit
Click OK

Instead of resetting permissions one subkey at a time, right click the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive and choose Permissions.
Everyone should be the only Group or User listed, according to the registry error you posted.
Does Everyone have Full Control and Read permissions ?

Add the Administrators and System and give them the same permissions.
Then install SP2.

Remove Admin and Sys afterwards whether SP2 installs or not.
Defrag the system if it does.

Sorry, Correction:

Following this section is copied Error 2, instead of Error 126.

Near the beginning of the log there was this Error 126. (Someone from Dell in Texas walked me through updating my graphics driver, if that is what this is referring to about being unsigned.)

Sorry, this is the 126 error:
