SP2 Will Not Install

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi,
Please, I need some help installing SP2 from the CD on a Dell Dimension
2350, Pentium 4, 40GB drive, 256, Windows XP Home SP1, IE6 SP1. I have tried
3 times and keep getting Access is Denied. My system would not restore. I
had to restore it in safe mode. I read MS’s What to Do Before, 873148.

I followed the Service Pack Installation Checklist at http://www3.telus.net.
step-by-step. I scanned with Kaspersky online, Symantec offline, used
AdAware (free), SpybotS&D–I do not use or have Tea Timer on, CWShredder, (my
system was clean), Disk Cleanup, CheckDisk, Defragged, and set a System
Restore Point. I unchecked everything under msconfig, Startup tab and
Rebooted my computer and made sure nothing else was running.

While SP2 was Installing Files, at FXSAPI..DLL, there is a loooong pause and
the window abruptly closes, makes the error sound and another window says,
SP2 Setup.... Access is Denied. Clicked OK. SP2 Setup error window opens and
says: SP2 Installation did not complete. Select OK to undo the changes that
have been made. Clicked OK. WindowsXP SP2 Removal Wizard begins and it goes
through Updating Registry, Running Process After Uninstall, and during
Performing Cleanup, it closes and makes the error sound and a window opens
and says: “SP2 installation did not complete. WindowsXP has been partially
updated and may not work properly.” Clicked Ok. It never gets to Starting
Services, the last step after Performing Cleanup.

I then found and followed step-by-step MS Article 873148, You receive an
“Access is denied” error message..... I enabled verbose logging. These were
the Error 5 I had in the setupapi.log:

#E008 Setting registry value HKCR\.ivf\PersistentHandler
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.
#E065 Parsing AddReg section [Product.Add.Reg] in
"c:\7556af91b641854273d567898caf\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5:
Access is denied.
#E064 Parsing install section [ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install]
in "c:\7556af91b641854273d567898caf\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5:
Access is denied.
#E008 Setting registry value HKCR\.ivf\PersistentHandler
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.
#E065 Parsing AddReg section [Product.Add.Reg] in
"c:\7556af91b641854273d567898caf\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5:

Access is denied.

I set Permissions for HKCR\.ivf\PersistentHandler. I don’t know what the
other Error 5's were, in the brackets [].

The next time I tried to install it, the Error 5 was:
#-007 Deleting registry key HKCR\vnd.ms.radio
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied. So I gave it Permissions.

It still would not install and I got all the same SetUp error Windows as I
described above. Immediately before the above Error 5's, there are 55 lines
like this, with a different name for each .inf file. I just copied a couple
lines of the 55:

#E197 Writing "C:\WINDOWS\INF\fltmgr.inf" to "C:\WINDOWS\INF" is not an
approved method of installing INF files. Use a 'CopyINF' entry instead.
#E197 Writing "C:\WINDOWS\INF\agp.inf" to "C:\WINDOWS\INF" is not an
approved method of installing INF files. Use a ‘CopyINF’ entry instead.

Near the beginning of the log there was this Error 126. (Someone from Dell
in Texas walked me through updating my graphics driver, if that is what this
is referring to about being unsigned.)

#-019 Searching for hardware ID(s): display\in-sb-8xx-platforms
#-018 Searching for compatible ID(s): display\in-sb-8xx-platforms

[ of installing INF files. Use a 'CopyINF' entry instead.

I was going to try installing in Safe Mode as Administrator (I was trying to
install with administrative rights under my user name) but when SP2 started
extracting the files a wizard opened and said “not recommended unless system
is not functioning properly.” So I didn’t proceed in Safe Mode because my
system is functioning just fine. Other than not installing SP2.
As the screen started scrolling to get into safe mode, the multiple lines
of white printing across the black screen has Partition 2 in them. I have
not partitioned it. Must have been Dell. Is it ok to try and install it in
safe mode?

So now I don’t know what to do. My free space has gone from 78% free to
62% free. If I keep this up SP2 will be telling me I don’t have enough
space. :))
Can someone please help me with this. Sorry it got so long.
Thanks.
Judy
