Re: KB918899 fails to install

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

After that incident, i removed the update, rebooted and things where back
to normal. I have net access.
After reading your reply i said what the hell, go for it. i switched the
program file folder back to c:, ran the update with no problems, had net
access and also validated update. Switch the progam file folder back to
where i had it and still seems to be working.
Thanks for your time
p.s. i'll probably be be soon ;)

1. If you've disabled your third-party firewall, make certain the
Windows Firewall is enabled.

2. Assuming you're running WinXP SP2:

Start > Run > (type in) cmd > [OK]

In the Command window, carefully type:

netsh winsock reset

Press [ENTER] and reboot.

I ran a LINUX Live cd (CentOS), and had no problem connecting to the
net. So i'm doubting it's a net card issue
Ohh and thanks for all your help

Sorry was having abit of a newsreader glitch..wasn't showing the
rest of the post. I think i've fixed that issue.
I followed the other persons advice. changed program folders back to
c: \program files, and that seemed to work. but know i can't connect
to the internet, using cable modem or dial up. I can see the LAN
with no problem. Firewall is not running and ran the connection
setup wizard again to try and see if that helped. Still can't
connect. i also tried and set the program files folder back to the
setting i was using before i set it back to c:\program files.

Please quote all of the previous message when you reply, Suicyco.
Thank you.

Have you tried installing it manually while logged in as
Administrator /and/ with your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware "protections" disabled?

Do you see any errors associated with the attempted installs of
918899 in your windowsupdate.log?

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/windows_update_codes.htm
and/or go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and
Support link in left pane > Solve problems on your own. --

Sorry, used a different ID on that post

I've been trying to update an XP system. All the other updates
downloaded and installed, except the cumalative security update
KB918899 fails each time i try to update it. I was using the WU
sight to update. I then downloaded the update file and tried
running it. Seemed to be installing, then at the end it says
setup canceled. I am the Admin on the systen and was in the admin
account. Anyone else have this problem or maybe have some
insight to whats going on? TIA

Try installing it manually in Safe Mode.

thanks for the advice..i just tried that, using the built in
Admin account
and the Admin Account i created. Both times the same reults
happened; setup
canceled after seeming to install it

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all
of previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. I have
no idea what this thread is about or what you've tried
previously.

Thank you.
