MowGreen,
I have the Linksys WRT54GC router it is a 4 port with wireless. I do have
the router plugged in directly to the desktop with a cat6e patch cable. I do
not use the wireless feature, I only got that model router because when I got
it it was on rebate special.
I can plug my laptop directly into the modem and connect. But only the
desktop (problem computer) does not connect when plugged directly into the
modem. I can plug the router into the modem and gain connectivity through
the router to either the desktop or laptop.
I'm not sure what "PSS" is ?
Is that the windows update tech line?
If so, I did hear back from the current tech, she seems to be the slowest
with replies takes an average of two to three full days to get a response.
The two previous techs replied within 24 hrs pretty regularly.
Her latest directions had me reset two HKEY registries, and when those did
not work, she had me download the XP SP2 file and try to reinstall it. After
installing the file, the computer would not restart, after the bios start up
screen it just provided a flashing cursor, although you could not enter any
commands. I had to boot from the XP disc and use the "repair" feature.
I have emailed her with my results of the SP2 failure and am awaiting her
response.

Something is amiss. You should be able to plug an ethernet cable from
the Desktop into the modem and have connectivity.
What is the make and model of the router ?
And, did you ever hear from PSS on this case ?

I don't know what all those errors mean?

To view this file one has to use Search, it will not show in either
Windows Explorer nor My Computer.
To change the appearance of Search Companion
Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
Click Change preferences.
Click Change files and folders search behavior.
Click Advanced to quickly display the options to search for files and
folders.
For Search Options, put a check next to Advanced Options.
Now put a check next to :
Search system folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search Subfolders
In the Search for files or folders named line, input wups.dll
Click the Search Now button.
Delete the copy of wups.dll found in the following folder :
WINDOWS\system32\SoftwareDistribution\Setup\ServiceStartup\wups.dll\5.8.0.2469
Now check to ensure that the COM+ Event System is not disabled and is
functioning.
Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc
Click OK
Scroll down to COM+ Event System
Double click it
It should be set to Manual.
Click the Start button to see if it functions correctly.
If it does, close the Services console. ( If it doesn't, COM+ needs to
be repaired. We'll attempt to repair it in the next post. )
Revisit Windows Update to see if the issue is resolved.

Using DAF allowed me to determine that the secedit.exe file was either
corrupt/missing and I was able to download it and continue.
After the DAF completed, I tried the WindowsUpdate again and this time

I searched for fixes and it seems that there is a spyware program
running? I searched for the software programs named and did not find
any. I have the AOL Security installed, but the spyware and virus
protection is set on disable( has been since I have been trying to fix
the WindowsUpdate).
I also used the Microsoft Malicious Software removal tool and it found
no programs to remove.
So I am unsure if this is worse because I now have a second
problem/error code, or is a step forward because the first
problem/error code has now changed to a second error code?

Plug the laptop directly to the modem. Did it obtain an IP addy ?
If yes, then look at the NIC in the Desktop as being the culprit.
It may need a new driver or, it may be on it's last legs.
Let's try one last step here for the Windows Update issue ...

red X. Click the Close button when done or no Policies are listed.
Click the Tools button.
Click on " Flush DNS "
Click Go
Next, scroll down and click on " Reset networking interfaces "
Click Go. Click Close.
Now click the Green check mark. All options should now be selected.
Click Go. Click Exit.
Restart the system and revisit Windows Update.
Any relief ?

I called dsl tech and they tried to reset the ip several times and
nothing worked.
I am beginning to think this system is on its last leg, as there
must be something seriously wrong as I am finding more and more
issues. I also realized that the Flash player was not working
properly and went to the Macromedia site to download a new version
and was unable to, after starting the download the system would not
finish the install, but the system did not lock up.
I am wondering if buying a new harddrive and doing a fresh install
of windows would be the next logical step?
Would I be able to use the original as a slave and access the data,
or would that not work since that drive would already have a
operating system on it?
I am totally confused at this point, since all the fixes that work
for everybody else don't seem to affect my system either better or
worse???

Try connecting the system directly to the modem with an ethernet
cable, please. This way we can eliminate the router as the cause of
the issue.
The error message for wuauclt.exe is correct. Sorry about including
that file to reregister ... it was a mistake on my part, STurbo.
Please reregister these 2 files, also.
Start > Run ( press Enter after each entry ) :
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
Retry Windows Update if connecting directly to the modem didn't
resolve the issue.
