KB917422 didn't install

I just did today's batch of updates for XP. All save one installed
(and then I rebooted). The one that didn't install is KB917422. The
msgs are less than helpful. On the "Review your update history" page,
this update is marked with the "Failed" icon (and a question mark after
it--no idea what that means). There are two hyperlinks: one, for the
name, just pops up a window telling what the update is for. The other
one, the "Failed" icon itself, pops up another window giving the error
code (0x80070003), and suggests several "self-help options". I'll come
to those in a second.
When I try to re-do the update process, Windows Update tells me there
are no high priority updates.
Back to the "self-help options": one of the pages that comes up when I
try the "Find Solutions" link is
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336/en-us. I did what it says, but
Windows Update still tells me there are no high priority updates.
The bottom of the 910336 says that if at first you don't succeed, try
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602/. This basically directs you to
look at the KB917422.log file. This turns out to be an 18k file, so I
won't attach it here. And it's hard to tell where the error is, but
there are a number of lines like
1.578: KB917422 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.
The 906602 page says to go to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/deployment/winupdte.mspx#EHAA.
That's a very long article, and about all I can find about the "The
update.ver file is not correct" msg is "The update.ver file is not
correct." Unhelpful, to say the least... It also tells how to remove
an update. Maybe that's what I need to do, but I'm not sure.
So in summary: since KB917422 apparently didn't install, how can I
force Windows Update to re-install it?
.
