Re: Windows Update failing

Hello again.
I followed Unk's post which did not work either
following down your list of questions/instructions in order:
Security is set to Medium and allows signed ActiveX
I added the six sites you listed to the Trusted Zone
I unchecked the Require....
I have no third party Firewalls, I use Microsoft Security
but, I also have AdAware, SpyBot and AVG Antivirus installed
I have no cookie blockers to my knowledge
I periodically clean out the Temporary Internet Files and Cookies
I have no recollection of blocking any cookies
I rechecked Automatic Updates and Bits which are both on Automatic
I turned Off Automatic Updates as requested
I normally check for Windows Updates by clicking on Control Panel, and on
the left menu list the first option is for Windows Update

Under C:\Windows\System32 the two files muweb.dll and mucltui.dll are not
there

of the list of files you asked me to check, all were present and dated
5/26/2005 except the following:
wuauserv.dll is dated 8/4/2004 not 5/26/2005
wupdmgr.exe is dated 8/4/2004 not 12/5/1999
wupdinfo.dll is not present

I didn't give you the instructions because UNK gave them in their post.
I located this on the web, which I did a long time ago:

Open Control Panel | Internet Options
Under Security Tab, check the settings for Internet Zone

If you get a message that "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page" (error code 0x80246008), first make sure that you have allowed the ActiveX control used by Windows Update to be installed.

In Trusted Zone, try adding these six entries after clicking Sites button (leave Require .... unchecked):

a.. http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
b.. http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
c.. https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
d.. http://Download.Windowsupdate.com
e.. http://V5.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
f.. https://v5.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Of course, this is dependent on any third-party Firewalls. Do you have any? Any Cookie blockers (e.g., McAfee Privacy Service)? Have you cleaned out Temporary Internet Files and Cookie? Have you ever blocked any cookies?

Make sure Automatic Updates and BITS is set on in Services:

1. Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services
2. Make sure Automatic Updates is set to Automatic and BITS is set to Automatic or Manual
3. Make Sure under Logon As column, LocalSystem is the user

Open Control Panel | Automatic Updates and check your settings for Automatic. For now, I would set to OFF, so that you can control the entire operation.

How do you connect to check for Updates, IE | Tools | Windows Update? Microsoft Update Start Menu button? Windows Update Start Menu button?

Check to see if you have the new Microsoft Update components:

C:\Windows\System32\muweb.dll
C:\WIndows\System32\mucltui.dll

05/26/2005 04:19a 178,408 muweb.dll
05/26/2005 04:16a 127,208 mucltui.dll

Also check the dates on these files (and existence) under C:\Windows\System32:

05/26/2005 04:19a 173,536 wuweb.dll
05/26/2005 04:16a 465,176 wuapi.dll
05/26/2005 04:16a 124,184 wuauclt.exe
05/26/2005 04:16a 172,312 wuauclt1.exe
05/26/2005 04:16a 174,360 wuaucpl.cpl
05/26/2005 04:16a 1,343,768 wuaueng.dll
05/26/2005 04:16a 194,328 wuaueng1.dll
05/26/2005 04:16a 18,712 wuauserv.dll
05/26/2005 04:16a 127,256 wucltui.dll
05/26/2005 04:16a 41,240 wups.dll
05/26/2005 04:16a 18,200 wups2.dll
12/05/1999 04:00p 47,376 wupdmgr.exe

Background Intelligent Transfer Service can cause the error if
it isn't running. Get that running
start > control panel > administrative tools > services > BITS -
if it's set to manual, it ought to work;
and get rid of your pilot 905474:

My last successful update was on 6/16/06.
On 7/5/06 KB905474 failed.
Subsequently this has failed again and so have
KB890830
KB916595
KB914388
KB917159
All show the error code 0x80246008 with the advice to try again. I have and
it just fails again.

I have tried Robin Walker's suggestion of a Windows Update fix from
http:\\wiki.djlizard.net/dial_a_fix_beta but it did not solve the problem.

I also tried her suggestion of installing a file asp.dll in
c:\windows\system32\inetsrv but it did not solve the problem.

Very interestingly, although KB 905474 is reportedly failing to install and
update, the Update History shows it updated successfully on 4/27/06.

Now what?????????
