Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.
Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.

By deleting the contents of the Download folder - you have removed any
downloaded updates.
If that doesn't work then you'll need to rename the softwaredistribution
folder:

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type
%systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
folder.
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.

| Hi, I followed instructions below but need to clarify a couple of things;
|
| 1. After typing net stop WuAuServ do I also type exit or press enter/close
| the window (please excuse my ignorance!).
|
| 2. Also, when I attempt to rename the folder to SDOLD I receive the
| following message "Cannot rename SoftwareDistribution: Access is denied.
Make
| sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not
| currently in use".
|
| Please help. I followed advice to overcome the 0x8024400A errror & then
| encountered this one.... aargh!!
