Re: KB918419 failure? Check your antispy program for BHO blocking.

Norton has a habit of not truly 'turning off' when you tell it to - and leaving all sorts of wonderful pitfalls lying around for your code to fall into without your knowledge - just look at the running services and processes when Norton is supposedly 'off'.

What smacks of Norton? an inability to prevent an infection that then proceeds to deactivate Norton, and which Norton probably denies exists. Any number of people in these newsgroups can testify to similar experiences - most, granted, in Win 9x rather than the NT line, but....

Just look at the list of support articles about Symantec software on the MS site
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2005-46,GGLG:en&q=symantec+site%3Asupport%2Emicrosoft%2Ecom

of which about 10,400 are for NAV specifically
http://www.google.co.uk/search?num=50&hl=en&newwindow=1&safe=off&rls=GGLG%2CGGLG%3A2005-46%2CGGLG%3Aen&q=%22Norton+Anti-Virus%22+site%3Asupport.microsoft.com&meta=

and 200-odd of which involve the word 'reinstall'
http://www.google.co.uk/search?num=50&hl=en&newwindow=1&safe=off&rls=GGLG%2CGGLG%3A2005-46%2CGGLG%3Aen&q=%22Norton+Anti-Virus%22+reinstall+site%3Asupport.microsoft.com&meta=

Norton is the ONLY AV that I know of that has regularly to be reinstalled after use of System Restore - Why? - because every update to NAV adds hooks into the registry, which are critical to NAV's function, and reverting the registry therefore breaks NAV.
Do they explain this up front?? No.
Have they worked around the problem - perhaps by not hooking so deep into the registry?? No.
Do they intend to do anything to help the long-suffering user? Apparently not.

Recently I came across a new problem with NAV(at least it was new to me) - on a machine connected via router to the internet, Live Update apparently insisted on using the dialup connectoid to attempt connection to the Symantec servers for updates - the ONLY way that I could get Norton to update was to remove ALL the dialup connectoids. (and before you say that's a problem with this system alone - far from it! The Symantec techy pounced on that as the solution first off - and insisted over my protestations that it was the only solution.) What sort of a company installs that faulty a connection client??

This *is* turning into rant now - which I wanted to avoid, but hopefully you can appreciate why I detest Norton software so much.

BTW - from what I know, the Symantec Professional-grade software has very few of the pitfalls of the retail-grade Norton stuff.

I said it was "just a suspicion." Regardless, I'm not here to give
evidence - this isn't a courtroom, I'm not an investigator, and you're
not the judge or jury.

AH! - the key word - NORTON!!!! (why was I
waiting for that?)

I don't have a clue why you would be waiting for that. I've already
said, several times, that the anti-virus software was turned off. As
such, Norton AV did not contribute to the situation I described in any
manner whatsoever. So why would that be "the key word" in this regard?

Actually, if you had taken the time to read my messages, you might
have noticed I said just the opposite - anti-virus software (Norton)
would have likely prevented the viruses on my computer - the only
times I've experienced a virus is when anti-virus software (Norton) is
disabled. Indeed, that is the very premise of the first message I
posted to this thread in response to another person's suggestion to
turn off anti-virus software.

Another trashed my system so bad, Norton
didn't even get a chance to run afterwards.
Both it and another had to be fixed manually
(one fixed only by restoring my drive from
a backup)

Yup - that smacks of Norton all over

Huh? What smacks of Norton? At this point, you're not even making
sense. A virus trashes my computer to the point it will not startup
properly, and you think that smacks of Norton? In realitly, I think
your zeal to trash Norton may be hindering capacity for rational
thought - and that hinders any possibility for rational discussion. So
while I intended to end my part in this discussion earlier, I will
definately end it now. Once again, take care, Noel.
