I can't ger Microsoft one_care to work without warnings and been
waiting for one care help. Very afraid i made a big mistake getting
rid of norton. One care always tells me my computer needs help
because Microsoft .Net framework
1.1 service pack needed as a critical update. Won't install over and
over. two error codes trying all sorts of things error 0x643 and
error 1706 no valid source could be found. below is what i asked
microsoft to help me with but so far i don't even know if they got my
two emails:
questions:
1)Do I need framework 1.1 service pack like microsoft
update says I need?
This is a security-related update, so you should apply it. If it will not
install properly, then use control panel Add/Remove Programs to uninstall
Microsoft .NET Framework v1.1, and reinstall it from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en
2)Is Live OneCare a replacement for my old antivirus
and firewall or do i need to products?
You must uninstall any other third-party anti-virus or firewall products
before installing OneCare. There are known conflicts between certain
third-party anti-virus and OneCare.
3)Should I use dotnetfx_cleanup_tool? I have read some warnings and
concerns about dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.
Steer clear of this in case it damages those parts of .NET that OneCare
relies on. IF you choose to use this tools, uninstall OneCare first, then
re-install it again after you have reinstalled both .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0
4)Should I use my original DELL disk and re install
Windows XP?
No need yet, just get the Framework update to work.
5)Should I re install Windows XP service pack 2? I
got it on cd.
No need yet, just get the Framework update to work.
6)Does every computer have this framework problem?
No. The ones that have Framework problems typically had beta versions
installed instead of the proper release, or other non-standard states.
I have used the repair command under add/delete programs to repair
Microsoft framework 2.0 but still that framework 1.1 service pack
won't install.
..NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 have nothing to do with each other, and repairing one
will not help the other.
The "work around" microsoft gives is crazy---how is
turning off my anti virus program (which is one_care) going to solve
the problem?
Because third-party anti-virus applications have been known to prevent
Windows Update working correctly.
I've always had auto updates on so why does one_care
want me to update now when this update has been around for a long
time. Did microsoft auto update not consider this a critical update??
Yes, but presumably the update failed, so it is still being requested.
OneCare definitions are updated frequently, and this check for this udpate
might be a recent definition update for OneCare.
