Our bookkeeper downloaded 7 Windows Update on Monday (6/19). After
the update, her computer was a mess. Every time the computer
reboots, "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification" error message pops
up. When I try to open Internet Explorer, error message of
"encountering a problem" pops up and IE never can be opened. I keep
getting Office Watson errors. Integer overflow errors from other
applications. I scanned for virus and spyware and found nothing. I
tried downloading IE7 and it failed to install. Finally I used
System Restore and went back to 6/12 before the updates. Then the
computer worked normal again.
I then tried downloading one Windows Update at once. Only KB 916281
causes IE to crash and all the error messages to pop up. Computer
acts normal with other updates.
There have been reported failed installations of 916281 caused by
third-party anti-virus, anti-malware (e.g. SpySweeper), or firewall
products. Please disable all such third-party products. If you need a
firewall, enable Windows Firewall. Then try running the 916281 update
again. Does that solve your problem? Please report back.
This computer was running Windows 98. Then our company bought volume
licensing copies of XP Pro XP2.
The WGA Notification false positive is a different problem, usually caused
by a failed installation of update 905474. Usually this can be solved by
downloading and installing:
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windowsxp-kb905474-enu-x86_4bafa8793e8cdcaf4ba4ffc494df32d496154544.exe
Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?
This is a link to a later version of 905474 than currently offered by
Windows Update. Windows Update History will not include a record of this
manual installation, although earlier installation attempts for 905474 will
remain in History. The effect of installing this version manually is that
Windows Update will not offer 905474 again until the version offered by
Windows Update is more recent than this one.
There are other things that can cause the false positives (e.g. broken
cryptographic services in Windows), but try that download first.
