Re: Windows Update Problems

See if this MSKB article provides a resolution to the System Restore issue :

Error Message: System Restore Cannot Run Until You Restart the Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274092

If you utilized System Restore, the previously installed updates are no longer present and need to be reinstalled.
Strongly suggest you use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall problematic updates instead of SR.

If the above MSKB provides no resolution to the System Restore issue, please read this one :

Error Message: System Restore Was Unable to Create a Restore Point
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303354

Both articles recommend running the registry checker.
Method 3 in the second article provides a means for renaming the restore directory so that it can be rebuilt automatically by Win ME.

I am running Windows Me.

The latest Windows Update had 5 programs - kb918547, kb917344, kb916281, kb917734, kb 918439.

When I downloaded all 5 and sought to install one failed viz: kb918547.

On rebooting/start up of computer I now get the following message

"Windows is bypassing your startup files

Please wait while setup updates your configuration files
This may take a few minutes........

File not found. Windows could not upgrade one or more system files before restarting"

When I went back to Windows Update and try to download and install kb918547 again it again fails to install.

It also shows the other 4 programs as critical updates even though they were successfully downloaded and installed (confirmed on installation history)

What do I need to do to fix this problem? I have tried the web & Microsoft pages but cannot find the solution.

I did manage to run system restore once but the restore did not work. I now cannot access system restore - when I try it says that I need to reboot but after reboot and passing problem described above system restore gives the same message ie: need to reboot.

Many thanks
