Multiple 'Automatic Updates' icons filling the screen on PC boot (Windows 2000)

The operating system is Windows 2000 with SP4. It was working fine
until about a week ago, and there have been no new installs during this
time. Every morning, he has loads (probably hundreds) of the 'automatic
updates' icon filling his screen (the MS flag / Globe) picture that
usually sits in the task bar. After that, he can work normally but
periodically four of these icons appear in their usual place in the
task bar, but as soon as he moves the mouse over them they disappear.
Has anyone seen this weird problem, and does anyone have any
suggestions on how to resolve it? Thanks.
